Pattern and Layering

               Gouache on Tyvek, 36″ x 21″

This pattern was originally composed of hexagons within larger hexagons. To add more diversity to the pattern, I added a series of overlaying squares.

My intent for this design was to create an intense contrast of colors. By having the larger hexagon be a secondary color surrounded by an earthy-tone, a sense of depth is created. To truly emphasize this feeling of depth, the outside of the squares was painted with varying tones of gray. To have that surround the inner works of this painting truly force the colors to almost pop out of the page.
